Welcome to the New Iron Age

From the first discovery of fire, we have satisfied our energy needs by burning organic carbon based materials such as wood and fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil. Even in our technology driven post industrial revolution world, we rely mainly upon burning fossil fuels to create industrial heat or super-heated steam to drive steam turbines Generating electricity. Renewables such as wind and solar power account for less than 20% of energy generation and are not suited to the provision of high temperature industrial heat as well as suffering from intermittency in power delivery. Many complex and yet unproven technologies are being considered in the race to reduce emissions. What is needed to reach Net Zero by 2050 is a clean, recyclable fuel that can utilise our collective knowledge on combusting solid fuels while leveraging our existing conventional infrastructure to store and transport the fuel, safely, simply and economically.

About Us

By combining the knowledge and experience of scientists, researchers, government agencies, and entrepreneurs, Ferron accelerates the pace of sustainable, circular developments in the field of metal fuels and renewable energy.

Our team is experienced bringing disruptive technologies to market. We will utilise core technologies initially developed in Europe with our partners and create a recyclable metal fuels eco-system in Australia to serve AsiaPac and European markets.

Why Burn Iron ?

Metal iron Fuels are Carbon free

Iron fuels contain no carbon so no carbon dioxide or methane is emitted during the combustion or recycling process.

Metal Iron fuels are energy rich

Iron fuel powders burn in air at ~2000 C, releasing similar amounts of energy to fossil fuels in the form of heat and light. This high temperature heat can be used for difficult to de-carbonise industrial processes or the production of super-heated steam for steam turbines.

Metal Iron fuels are fully recyclable

Iron fuels produce iron oxide ash as the waste product on burning. This ash can be simply collected and regenerated with green hydrogen to produce fresh iron fuel and water. The recycling process can be repeated again and again.

Metal Iron Fuels are Clean & Safe

Iron fuel powders are safe to store and transport in bulk requiring no advanced technology other than currently available material bulk storage systems. Iron oxide waste is inert and non-toxic and commonly known as rust.

A True Circular Economy - The Iron Cycle

Iron is a clean, dense and renewable energy carrier based on the circular process of combustion and regeneration of iron powder. Iron burns cleanly, releasing renewable energy in the form of high temperature heat. This heat can be used directly in industrial processes or used to generate electricity from steam. The waste ash, iron oxide or more commonly called rust from combustion is collected and recycled with green hydrogen back into iron fuel with the only waste product being clean water! The recycled iron fuel can be burned again to repeat the cycle, creating a true circular iron power system. The combustion process and recycling with green hydrogen to recharge the fuel is completely CO2 free.

Applications for Metal Iron Fuels

Metal fuels have the ability to displace gas and coal in many hard to abate heat intensive applications. Hard to abate industries include furnaces, reactors and ovens used in steel, cement, industrial chemical, glass and brick manufacturing. Metal fuels are also suited to supporting electricity grids directly or providing long duration energy storage solutions and unlike batteries may provide power for days or months. Longer term applications include the retrofitting of gas and coal power stations and maritime propulsion for container vessels.
